First Half Summary

France had the ball for 66 percent of the first half. They moved it side to side but Northern Ireland stayed compact in a 5-4-1 block. The first 40 minutes were cagey. France found no space. Northern Ireland almost stunned the crowd.

Patrick Kelly shot inches wide from close range before France scored. That was their warning. France kept probing. Ousmane Dembele had a shot blocked. The ball fell to Olise. He swept it home from close range in the 43rd minute. 1-0.

The goal came right before halftime. It settled French nerves. Northern Ireland defended with desire. Shea Charles drove from midfield and caused problems. Jamie Donley thought he equalized but the goal was disallowed for a foul on Theo Hernandez. Kylian Mbappe also had a strike ruled out for offside. France led 1-0 at the break but it felt tight.

France vs Northern Ireland: Turning Point

The 43rd minute opener was the shift. France went into halftime frustrated. They had all the ball but no clear chances. Olise’s goal changed the mood. It forced Northern Ireland to come out more in the second half.

Deschamps brought on Malo Gusto as a sub and he made an instant impact. Four minutes after the restart Gusto fired in a dangerous cross. The defense failed to clear it. Olise arrived and smashed in a half volley. 2-0 in the 49th minute.

That killed Northern Ireland’s game plan. The 5-4-1 block could not hold anymore. France relaxed. The hosts controlled the tempo after that. The second goal gave them space and confidence.

Player Performance

Best performer for Northern Ireland: Patrick Kelly. He scored his first international goal and looked brave on the ball. He justified his start and gave France problems on the counter.

Struggled: Kylian Mbappe. He missed chances and looked frustrated. His goal was disallowed and could not get into the game like Olise. The PSG star was overshadowed by his teammate on the night.
