Fuel costs are overwhelming to understand when daily headlines mention market shifts and international conflicts constantly. However, the connection between the international crude standards and local petrol station receipt is simpler than it appears. Throughout the year, global oil prices have been experiencing dramatic swings that directly impacted retail fuel rates in Dubai and across the UAE.

When the international yardstick of crude oil increases, local fuel committees adjust retail rates relative to those changes. The UAE decentralized petrol prices back in 2015 to align the costs with international market corrections. Consequently, drivers in Dubai feel the immediate financial impact of these corrections. Tracking the journey of crude oil from January to July gives a clear insight into why prices rise and fall each month.

A Calmer Start to the Year

The year started on a calmer note for international energy markets. During January and February, Brent crude traded steadily between $69 and $71 per barrel. Supply chains were stable and global demands were following predictable patterns.

Because the crude costs remained low, Dubai motorists enjoyed some of the most affordable fuel rates of the year. As per official historical data from Gulf News, Special 95 was priced at AED 2.42 per liter in January. Dipping lower in February, the prices hit AED 2.33 for Special 95. Special 98 stayed stable at AED 2.45 per liter. The consumers had a very cost-effective start to 2026.

Geopolitical Conflicts Trigger Price Surges

March and April were a tumultuous period in the market. Things quickly spiraled out of control in the Middle East, escalating into military conflicts. Market traders were frightened because of possible shipping interruptions on vital sea lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz.

Consequently, global oil prices rose sharply with fears of lower supplies taking over oil trading desks. Brent crude jumped from under $70 per barrel to an average of $99.40 in March and surpassed $102.81 in April.

The UAE Fuel Price Committee reacted very quickly to these international price increases. Special 95 increased slightly to AED 2.48 per litre in March. The big blow to pumps came in April though, when Special 95 surged to AED 3.28 per litre, and Super 98 hit AED 3.39 per litre. In the meantime, commercial transport was under severe strain due to the soaring price of diesel fuel up to AED 4.69 per litre.

Brent Crude Breaks High Thresholds

This upward trend continued throughout May when military threats and security risks continued to arise around vital shipping routes. The St. Louis Fed FRED also shows that monthly average prices for Brent crude reached a high point of $103.84 per barrel in May.

Oil prices at higher levels prevailed during this period, driving the retail prices of fuel up across the UAE. Special 95 is at AED 3.55 per litre while the premium Super 98 is at AED 3.66 per litre for Dubai drivers. Such surges made many residents consider their daily routine and cut out unnecessary driving and look at alternative transport options.

Diplomatic Negotiations Offer Temporary Relief

By June, international diplomatic efforts and tentative cease-fire negotiations began to restore market confidence. Traders anticipated that shipping lanes would reopen safely, which helped ease panic buying on energy exchanges.

Consequently, global oil prices retreated significantly from their peak spring levels. Brent crude dropped back down toward the $72 to $84 per barrel range by late June.

Even though June retail prices in Dubai still reflected May’s late highs. Special 95 temporarily reached AED 3.83 per liter. The market cooled in time for July. Relief arrived at local pumps on July 1, 2026, when authorities announced substantial price drops. Special 95 fell to AED 3.29 per liter, and Super 98 dropped to AED 3.40 per liter, providing welcome savings for UAE households.

Crude Breaches $100 Once Again

For early July, there was price relief as a result. But that relief was tenuous because of renewed conflict. Energy markets surged sharply on July 23, 2026, after new military action in the Middle East and attacks on oil tankers in the Red Sea led to a sharp upward swing in energy markets.

According to Investing.com‘s market data, Brent crude briefly hit $100 per barrel on July 23. The renewed concerns over supply security had immediate repercussions on the stock and commodity exchanges of the world. As global oil prices climbed rapidly late in the month, analysts began shifting their outlook for upcoming retail fuel announcements.

Looking Ahead to What Dubai Drivers Can Expect

As July draws to a close, UAE motorists are closely watching for the August fuel price announcement. The UAE Fuel Price Committee typically announces adjusted rates on the final day of each month, taking effect on the first of the next month.

Because late July experienced a sharp spike in global oil prices, market analysts expect local petrol prices to increase in August. While early July benefited from June’s lower crude averages, the sudden rebound over $100 per barrel will likely force an upward correction. Drivers in Dubai should prepare for higher costs at the pump starting August 1, 2026. Keeping an eye on international energy trends remains the best way to anticipate your monthly vehicle budget.
